I am a documentary photographer focusing on the often neglected aspects of the human journey. My work serves not only as an aesthetic expression, but also as a powerful reminder of the tenacity of the human beings.
The cinematic aesthetic interpretation of my work, evoke deep feelings, highlighting the challenging realities faced by those living in diverse environments.
Each of my series conveys a meaningful story, free from the influence of any judgements, allowing a deep insight into subjects' realities.
My aim is capture the complexities and dualities of the human experience, revealing how beauty and struggle coexist within the texture of life.

Currently based in Lyon, France, I have been working as a professional photographer since 2004, with a background in political science and multimedia communications.
I am driven by a strong interest in documentary and long-term projects where human beings and social and cultural phenomena are at the heart of the subjects covered.
I regularly work on personal projects, mainly with 135/120 films, alongside assignments and commitments to international and humanitarian organisations.
My target is to develop and produce documentaries as a means of cultural dissemination, through publications, editorial spreads and art exhibitions.
EXHIBITIONS
2026, Nicola’s project “GRAINY AMERICA”, was exhibited for its second time in Lyon at “Nation Photo”.
2024, Nicola’s work was exhibited at the gallery “Regards Sud” in Lyon with his latest project “GRAINY AMERICA” , aiming to explore the land of opportunity to showcase its people as they live their daily lives by stripping away the layers that make up US society in an attempt to understand it.
2023, he took part in the CHABE exhibition at the Marché Gare de Lyon, with his subject "En Marge" on homelessness in France.
2022, as part of the "NEW DISCOVERIES IN CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY" exhibition, Nicola is taking part in a group show celebrating the richness and diversity of new contemporary photography in many forms, with award-winning photographers from 41 countries on six continents at Caelum Gallery, New York. Theme of his work: "Black Lives Matter".
2021, his work in the humanitarian field was exhibited to mark the 50th anniversary of MSF, which presented three event exhibitions in Paris, Strasbourg and Bordeaux stations, in partnership with SNCF Gares & Connexions. Photographers featured in the 71/21 exhibition included Lynsey Addario, Gary Calton, Sylvain Cherkaoui, Narciso Contreras, Robin Hammond, Paul Hansen, Roger Job, Nicola Vigilanti, Sebastiao Salgado, Frédéric Sautereau, Luca Sola, Anna Surinyach, Nicole Tung, Eddy Van Wessel, John Wessels.
2020, his work about intensive care units during the first lockdown, as well as his documentary on the "Black Lives Matter" movement, were shown at the international photojournalism festival "VISA Pour l'Image" in Perpignan.
2011, Nicola Vigilanti exhibited a selection of his humanitarian reportage photos at the 40th General Assembly of Médecins Sans Frontières, Plaine Saint Denis - Paris.
2011, his work on the exploitation of children in West African gold mines was exhibited at the international photojournalism festival "VISA Pour l'Image" in Perpignan, in France.
2010, Nicola exhibited a documentary on the nomadic populations of Northern India at Palazzo Barone Ferrara gallery, in Bari (Italy).
2009 exhibition "Paris by night", produced by his first agency in Paris “Gamma Agency”, Nicola exhibited, at Palazzo Barone Ferrara gallery, in Bari (Italy), a series of twenty strictly nocturnal photos of his adoptive city - Paris.
1999 exhibition "Erasmus", about the intra-European cultural academic exchanges, organised by the University of Kiel, in Germany.

Je suis un photographe documentaire qui s'intéresse aux aspects souvent négligés du parcours humain. Mon travail n'est pas seulement une expression esthétique, mais aussi un rappel de la persévérance des êtres humains.
L'interprétation esthétique cinématographique de mon travail essaye de susciter des émotions profondes, mettant en lumière les réalités difficiles auxquelles sont confrontés ceux qui vivent dans des environnements variés.
Chacune de mes séries raconte une histoire significative, sans porter aucun jugement, permettant ainsi de mieux comprendre la réalité des sujets.
Mon but est de capturer les complexités et les dualités de toute expérience et de révéler comment la beauté et la lutte coexistent au travers de la texture de la vie.

2026, le projet de Nicola intitulé « GRAINY AMERICA » a été présenté pour la deuxième fois à Lyon, chez «Nation Photo».
2024, le travail de Nicola a été exposé à la galerie « Regards Sud » à Lyon avec son dernier projet « GRAINY AMERICA », visant à explorer la terre d’opportunités pour mettre en lumière ses habitants dans leur vie quotidienne, en décortiquant les différentes couches qui composent la société américaine afin de mieux la comprendre.

2024 « GRAINY AMERICA » : Cet ouvrage est un engagement envers la narration et la photographie documentaire, mais il me sert également de prisme à travers lequel j’explore, à un niveau personnel, ce que la photographie signifie pour moi : il s’agit de partager ma perspective et l’angle sous lequel je choisis de voir le monde.
